NICOLAS BERNIER: STRINGS.LINES

CD - Crónica 053, 2010. Created between September 2008 and February 2010 in the artist’s studio. Viola da gamba: Pierre-Yves Martel. Violin: Chris Bartos. Mastered by MC. Cover art by urban9.

1. line (strings)
2. line (a)
3. line (b)
4. line (c)
5. line (horizon)

“strings.lines” came to life from an obsession for old and forgotten object-matter and the desire to produce music that exists in between the new and the old. The starting point to the composition of this work were acoustic tuning forks. In 2007 Nicolas Bernier became fascinated with this object/instrument of particularly beautiful design, and started a collection of all the different kinds of tuning forks he could find. Some of these reached 21Hz, near the lower-limit of human hearing, some others produced extremely high frequencies, all of them became tools and instruments for improvisation through electroacoustic transformation, in a process of discovery. These improvisations were at the heart of a composition stage that was developed for almost two years. At the heart of the project was a state of mind leaning towards the restraints imposed by the tuning forks.

The “lines” in the title originates from here: from the constant pitches imposed by the tuning forks. They produce sounds that are perceptively close to sine waves, graphically represented by lines or sinusoids, the elementary sounds of electronic music and obviously the perfect musical object to draw a music around the boundary of electronic and instrumental music. The tuning fork is also a symbol of centuries of occidental music making that culminate with western tonal music, and the preservation of that symbolism was an important part of the second stage of the composition process, involving two string players, Pierre-Yves Martel on viola da gamba and Chris Bartos on violin. During the recording sessions, the instrumentalists were requested to play close to a single pitch, exploring the wood, the attacks and the resonant qualities of their instruments, while following some of the motives that had already been composed with the forks. The pieces presented in this edition are studio compositions of layers from the two stages of the work, blending both worlds while trying to keep a sense of the original materiality and timbres, but not refraining from using other sounds and sources whenever necessary.

Blindhæð is a belgian sound composter & distiller. His creations based on field recordings, various electronic treatments & manipulations, and an amalgam of both, show a sheer depth & multidimensionality through detailed textural & spatial developments. With only a downloadable compilation on Ruidemos, and a vinyl on ini.itu, whose lenghty titles give away a love for "terracing", recontextualization, and a consummate art of a story into a story, Blindhæð has already achieved to build a cohesive singular complex universe where Mystery is omnipresent. A negation of all easy short cuts, and a yearning for a refined sense of aesthetic, permanently supported by perceptive observation & empiric practice. Blindhæð transforms his intimate world into a vulnerable pregnant sound experience.
Swallowed up into the strata,
Dragged by some distant memories,
aware of their driving force,
small debris uncoil their tales...

Wood is cracking,
Low ground is breathing,
Various modulations of an invisible constant...

Scrutinizing beyond,
"Laguna Sunrise" exhales life, disrupting time,
illuminating the moments,
the bareness of a shore,
the slightest cracks,
in a festival of shimmers...

DISCOGRAFÍA ISABELASNACHO

Isabelasnacho
Antes del olvido

Isabelasnacho is (was or will be) an Argentinean singer/songwriter who writes timeless songs in a kind of emotional language, mixing sounds from different languages and sometimes from any language. He is also an excellent guitar player. Most registers in this album are early compositions except for the opener “Muerto estoy” (I’m dead) and "Gorriones" (Sparrows). Recorded with Madrid between July and August 2001 at “El Quinto” in Buenos Aires, the final master was finished by December 19 in the same year.

Invento

Invento (Invention), recorded in 2006, develops a theory on perception of the sound, for this aim, I didn’t want to use a conventional language. Thus I set out to create one which I call ‘etimophonic language’, that phonetically could express what it is not possible to be said with words, to deal with the origin of the feelings. I understood that in this work the most important was the phonetic intention or phonetic symbol than the etymologic or the explanation. This theory has an almost mystical aspect. It is based on a very deep belief, consisting of feelings that the matter is daughter to the sound and not as we understand it in our reality. The sound can create a sensation, then a thought and finally a life form. I believe that we are what we listen… For this work I used elements that I considered important as to represent what the last century was like: vinyl records, radio waves, etc. I wanted to represent the past and the future, not the present. In ‘Don de las almas’ and ‘A-Z-TAN’ I had to sing and to play the violin at the same time, something that directed and dominated me in a long time. I was convinced by the idea not to separate the voice and the violin. I lost intensity. In ‘Don de las almas’ I wanted to imitate with my voice the sound of the violin.

NOISH~ Y AYANKOKO

Ayankoko: Ayankoko is french sound artist David Vilayleck’s solo project. A formerly guitar player with various background influences as jazz, electro, traditional music turned himself into an electronica ambient noise artist since 2004. He released works through internet labels and use of creative commons license with hazardrecords, headphonica, dog-eared records, amp-recs, clinical archives, colin johnco records, and has performed extensively in Europe. His music aims at developing structures and tensions in the contemporary sound art landscape. He currently resides between Morocco, where he studies and works with masters of traditional trance/sufi music and Berlin.

GOLDEN CUP
